The transmission position sensor is responsible for cutting the power to the starter control circuit if a vehicle with an automatic transmission is not in the park or neutral so that the vehicle cannot be turned on. This is because, if a vehicle is able to start in reverse or drive gears, it can unintentionally move, causing damage to property or injuries to occupants or bystanders.
If your vehicle is able to start in a gear other than park or neutral, then it's advised to have the the transmission position sensor (switch) replaced immediately as it could potentially lead to harmful scenarios for yourself and other individuals inside or outside of the vehicle.
