Also known as the oil relief valve, the high pressure safety valve makes sure that oil pressure is maintained at all times regardless of how the engine is faring. When the engine oil is colder and therefore thicker, the pressure forces valves down against spring tension, enabling oil to reach the engine. At high speeds, excess oil is allowed to escape so that your car maintains high performance.
A failing safety valve results in a cracked cooler and oil leaks. A stalled or broken valve can be quite expensive and lead to even more costly procedures if the problem gets out of hand. If you begin experiencing any of these symptoms, have a mechanic inspect your car immediately.
