Gas caps are connected to the fuel filler neck, and shield the gas tank from debris and other contaminants. Additionally, a gasp cap will reduce your fuel emissions because it stops them from entering the atmosphere.
If your gas cap has issues, you should likely fix it as soon as you can to improve your fuel economy and mileage. If you fail smog tests and have poor economy, that’s a clear downside and cost every time you drive. On top of that, your gas bill will take the brunt of each ride in that car - not ideal at all.
