What Is An Accelerator Pump?

If your car uses a carburetor system and does not have fuel injectors, then it includes an accelerator pump. It is responsible for spraying fuel into the carburetor though is now replaced by modern fuel injectors. Occasionally, vintage and classic old cars will need an operational pump.

This pump supplies fuel and works in unison with the vacuum distributor, providing a timing advance that helps handle proper acceleration (helps to reduce jerking). Through frequent use, these pumps will often need to be replaced and a carburetor rebuild is often done with this procedure.

• Vehicle fails to accelerate smoothly under tougher driving conditions (weather, turns, etc.)
• Engine stutters when gas pedal is pressed down hard
